Labeling my diet
A lot of people always ask about my diet restrictions. And I haven’t quite come to terms with it. As mentioned in a previous post, I like to proudly says I’m pescegan. But I don’t hold that firmly. So I’ll be seen eating dairy or eggs and be accused I’m not pescegan. Which I’m 100% not. But I strive to be and won’t buy any of those ingredients on my own.
Not eating dairy or eggs, but eating fish is not a intuitive logic. Kantian ethics says if you shouldn’t use any animal as your own means. Utilitarianism allows for eating eggs and dairy because those animals are happy. My logic comes from not bringing animals into life and then using them to serve you. Eating wild fish is a “normal” part of an ecosystem. Bringing cows and chickens into life for them to serve you food doesn’t sit as right with me. Furthermore, the male calves and male chicks are killed because they can’t give the dairy and eggs to us. So there’s a negation to the happy lives that good quality eggs and dairy give.
Roger Scruton is advocates eating meat mindfully calls it “virtuous eating.” I never want to say that because it’s pompous and still doesn’t accurate depict what I try to do. So best thing I can come with it is that I eat vegan when I can, but will make exceptions for special occasions. It sounds pretty weak, and it quite frankly it is. But I hope it can sometimes spark discussions on my thoughts about eating animals and their products. Like I said, I don’t think I can convince anyone to change their eating habits. But it makes me feel more fulfilled if I can insert my thoughts into conversation.
