Rick Rubin’s latest book. He’s done a big podcast tour, with all of them being pretty different. Worth listening to. His book is written in a poetic manner too, highly recommend.
The Source: A pervasive force that taps into the spirit of human existence. We all have access to it, artists are people who try to express it in a form that can be shared.
Everyone is an artist. We all have our unique perspective and tools to try to express the source. Art doesn’t have to be a physical thing. It can be how you parent your kids or your way of interacting with other people.
It is not up to the artist to get a certain reaction from a viewer. An artist is putting their expression to the world to be shared.
Art starts out as a seed. Lots of seeds can be casted out at the same time. There is an experimentation phase that helps test out different conditions for the seed to grow. When the seed has sprouted, it is time to develop it to fruition.
Inspiration strikes like lightning. The lightning can’t be bottled. What you can do is figure out what conditions create higher chances of lightning.
Art exists in a snapshot of time. Don’t worry about how it will age or if it is an imperfect.
